What Cutting a Record to Lacquer Demands
A vinyl master is a different object than a streaming master, and the reasons are physical: groove width, playing time, stylus behavior and the plating chain that follows.

A record starts as a groove carved into a soft lacquer disc by a heated stylus mounted on a cutting lathe. The stylus swings side to side as the music drives it, and the width of that swing is the signal. Nearly everything that makes vinyl mastering a separate discipline follows from that one fact. The groove has to fit on the disc, the playback stylus has to stay inside it, and the disc holds only so much.
This is why a master prepared for vinyl is rarely the same file that goes to streaming. A digital master can be pushed hard into a limiter because nothing physical objects. Loudness normalization on the major platforms has taken some of the point out of that, but the practice persists. A lathe objects immediately. Cutting engineers usually ask for a mix with headroom left in it, and often prefer a version made before the final stage of limiting, because a squashed file gives them nothing to work with and forces choices they would rather make themselves.
Level against playing time
The lathe cuts a spiral, and the spacing between adjacent turns is not fixed. A pitch computer looks ahead at the signal, usually through a preview head or a delayed feed, and opens the spacing when a loud passage is coming and tightens it during quiet ones. Louder music means wider groove excursion, which means fewer grooves per inch, which means less music per side. That relationship is not negotiable. A very loud side that also runs long does not exist. The engineer, the artist and the label are choosing among three options: cut it quieter, cut it shorter, or spread it across more sides.
Low frequency content that is out of phase between the channels asks the cutter head to move vertically rather than horizontally. Push that far enough and the groove either breaks through the wall of its neighbor or lifts the playback stylus out of the record entirely. The standard defense is an elliptical equalizer that sums the bass to mono below a chosen crossover point, typically somewhere in the low hundreds of hertz, so that the deepest information moves the stylus laterally and stays put. Wide stereo bass in a mix is a common reason a cut comes back sounding narrower than the producer expected.
The other geometric problem is at the end of the side. The disc turns at a constant rate, so a groove near the label passes under the stylus more slowly than one at the outer edge. Less physical distance is available to describe the same high frequency detail, and the stylus traces it less accurately. Sibilance and bright percussion suffer first. Cutting engineers de-ess, and sequencing gets built around the fact: the loudest, brightest, most sibilant track rarely goes last on a side.
From lacquer to stamper
The lacquer itself is fragile and is not played more than it has to be. It goes to a plating facility, where it is coated with a conductive layer and electroformed into a metal negative. That part can be used as a stamper directly, or it can be grown through further generations so that one lacquer yields many stampers for a long run. Each generation is another chance for a defect to enter. Some plants skip lacquer entirely and cut directly to a copper blank instead. At the press, vinyl compound is heated, squeezed between two stampers with the labels in place, cooled and trimmed.
Test pressings come back before the run is committed. An artist listening to one is not evaluating the mix. The mix is settled. They are listening for non-fill, ticks, distortion in the loudest passage, warp, an off-center hole, correct speed and correct sequence. Approving a test pressing is a decision to accept several hundred or several thousand copies.
The calendar the plant sets
Plating and pressing capacity is finite and is booked in advance, and large catalog reissues compete for the same slots as a first record by an unknown act. Lead times vary by plant and by season, and an independent label often sets its release date around the slot it can get rather than the other way round. Digital dates get held back to match, or the record arrives on streaming first and on vinyl months later.
What is worth noticing is that these constraints stopped being obstacles and became an aesthetic. Surface noise, the gentle roll off at both extremes, mono bass, the shape of a side that has to end somewhere, the habit of building toward a closing track and then letting the run out groove take over: listeners hear all of it as warmth or as a sound. It is mostly physics, accepted for long enough that it turned into taste.
